How To Remove Chewing Gum From Carpets

Chewing gum sticks to any fabric, which is annoying because once you step on it, it is harder to remove it from your carpet. Well, don’t lose hope; there are still some options.

A hair dryer is the first common way to remove chewing gum from carpets. Start heating the chewing gum but don’t overheat it. Be careful not to melt the gum because it will interact with the fibres of your carpet, and you will damage them when trying to remove it. The gum will be sticky when heated, so use a plastic bag to pull it up. This method will clean most of the gum, but some will be left. Now use some detergent like dish soap mixed in hot water. Rub gently with the solution and clean the stain from the chewing gum. Try another method if the chewing gum or the stain isn’t cleaned.

When hot is not working, try cold. Put an ice cube over the chewing gum and wait a bit until the gum freezes. Once frozen, try scraping it away with a spoon or anything that is useful and won’t damage the fibres of your carpet. Do not use a knife because you risk cutting a hole in the carpet. When you scrape the top side of the chewing gum, freeze it again with the ice block and repeat the procedure. Remember, if your carpet has delicate fabrics, don’t apply the ice cube directly on the chewing gum; put it in a plastic bag first. When you finish this, there might be a stain on the carpet fabrics. To remove this, you will need to create a dissolving solution. Mix a cup of dishwashing liquid and a cup of white vinegar. If the fabrics are delicate, use more dishwashing liquid and less vinegar in a proportion of three to one. Now brush with an old toothbrush or a stiff brush. Rinse the spot.

Another way to remove chewing gum from carpets is using a clothes iron. Adjust your iron to low or medium temperature and stop the steaming. Now put a paper towel or brown paper bag on the gum and start heating on top of it with the iron. The chewing gum will melt and stick to the paper. Continue this procedure until you remove most of the gum. Now clean the spot left by the chewing gum using the suggested mixture of soap and white vinegar or any detergent that will not harm your carpet’s fibres.

Those tips should be enough to remove the annoying gum on the carpet. If not, revise buying this brand of chewing gums, don’t chew in the house or call professionals.
